THAT'S HOW WE ENDED UP HERE - Al Steele & Friends

If we are indeed at the 'end of the world' a pertinent question might be, 'How have we ended up here?'

As the album isn't just discussing the fate of the world, but how it relates to an ordinary man in the street, I figured this song could look at the journey from 3 different angles.

Verse 1 looks at a bloke that had everything and thought it would never end. But all good things DO come to an end and this guy missed his wedding because he wanted 'one more beer'.

Verse 2 is about a woman he let a guy in and began to realise she was in danger. In the end she had to flee and her old life was over.

Verse 3 looks at the world and how we arrived at a situation where wars are started on a whim, people are shot without legal consequences, genocide is the daily norm and justice has become a mockery.

How did it happen?... In most cases, little by little, piece by piece. Until the world we took for granted is just not there anymore.

That's How We Ended Up Here (Steele)
I had a butler, and I had maid                                           you know… that annoying type who has everything.
A big spare house in LA
I had truffles and oysters, the whole world at my feet
And limousines, well I had a fleet                                     a whole list of things that posh people have/do!
Lovely girls, and so many to choose
My life was charmed I just couldn't lose                         not true as he found out
So I cancelled the wedding for just one more beer      liked the idea of  the triviality of this
And that's how I ended up here

You gave him somewhere to belong                               a woman takes in a stranger
He bought his way in for a song                                       double meaning… maybe a musician?
To make him content you tried all you could do
In the end you believed it was you                                  gaslighting
You tried to get back on the track
But he beat you blue and black                                        liked the idea of turning the phrase on it's head
So you ran for the hills looking backward in fear
And that's how you ended up here

Little by little it whittled away                                           like most situation, it doesn't happen with just one thing…
The heat of the sun to a tepid grey                                  it's a combination of little things…
A parasite with undetectable stealth                               and you don't even see them coming…
You look in the mirror and can't see yourself, anymore      until it's too late

He was only a game show host                                         only in America! The land of the free!
And his primary skill was to boast
He said his opponents were all criminal sorts                the dirty elections fights… throw enough mud…
And one by one they fell through the boards
He said he would end all the wars                                     America first… hang on I've changed my mind!
But first he had to settle some scores
He inflamed the crowd and he silenced the courts        the list of transgressions is endless… here are a few.
He ran out of town all those illegal sorts
He said I'm a King and he claimed his   crown
In the end nothing and nobody could take him down    once civil liberty's have been eroded… it's too late
And that's how we ended up here
And that's how we ended up here                                      if you were sat around chatting,
How the hell (fuck) have we ended up here                      the ‘f’ word would be the most likely choice!
