APPETITE & GLUTTONY - Al Steele & Friends

As I was working on this song lyrically - and in this case that is what came first - I was feeling the deep south of New Orleans with it's voodoo and Cajun music. It then seemed obvious to include Doctor John in the lyrics… easier to rhyme than Allen Toussaint!!
I had a rough idea of how the tune might go but knew I needed a piano to get the Doctor John/Randy Newman vibe. As luck would have it, on my holiday to see my old best friend Pico, I discovered she had been a music student and had a piano in the attached Sauna buildings!!! We had free time the day before we came home, so I put the piano through it's paces. The chords are quite complex and in some way they take a little from Steely Dan - notably the song Pretzel Logic -  but I will go through that with a video about the music.
The lyrics begin as if they are coming from a very dodgy character (think You Can Leave Your Hat On) but as the song progresses it becomes more global.
Here is what I was thinking as I attacked this lyric.

Appetite & Gluttony (Steele)
I bought myself a big old bed,
I thought I might share it                   Male chauvenist bastard!
I bought myself a present,
I'd like for you to wear it                    even more!!!
Two things from a film I saw,            I never did see a film with these in…
would suit you very well
Appetite and gluttony                        The use of the word appetite is stolen from Prefab Sprout…
bedfellows from hell                          …using the word as a title is very odd, but what a great song!

I'm the Blipvert on the telly               Referring to blip advertising - where you show a single frame of something
That puts desire in your blood         Subliminally puts an idea into your head… as in the film of ‘Max Headroom’
I'm the weirdo in the alley
Who pretends that this is love
Have you got what it takes to be      Selling selfishness as a good, modern thing
the truly modern man?
Appetite and gluttony
Get it while you can                            … buy it now before stocks run out! Why do we fall for this?

I got this song from Doctor John and pills from Doctor Jack         If Jack Daniels made pills, they would be THE BEST
He said 'Everybody's taking them, and nobody comes back' They don't come back to normality. The drug is too strong
Now Doctor John is singing and the whole damn room is spinning
Appetite and gluttony are two such splendid chaps                Originally two such lovely chaps
From appetite and gluttony you never will come back            As Joni would say: down down down the dark ladder

How can you be happy                      Thinking of Israel and looking at what they could have
With that little patch of land
Come join us in our crusades           The Christian Crusades…
We're creating something grand
So go pick up your rifles                    …encouraged people to take up arms and fight
And throw away your plough           Leave your family at home to fend for themselves!
Appetite and gluttony                        Actually part of the lure of war was winning the spoils - land, posessions
You can sing it with me now

CHORUS

I got this these pills from Dr. Jack and a tune from Dr. John  Turned the line on it's head to enable a different rhyme
I dropped a couple in your drink so you can sing along          Nothing more insidious than spiking a drink
Now Doctor John is singing and the devils are all grinning     Success of the devils
From appetite and gluttony you never will come back            Again turned the lines to give a new slant
Yes appetite and gluttony are two such splendid chaps
