This song is a rare co-write with Danielle Nicholls.
Dan is always busy and usually has another song ready to go, but in a
weird fallow period without inspiration, this title seemed to sum up her mood perfectly. I sang a rough chorus line to her just in case she fancied taking it on. Later that night 2 Verses, a Chorus and a Middle 8, all arrived with a rough tune!
Later that week we looked at the chord sequence and between us we clarified the lyrics and the tune.
The song comes while the Song-man is still searching for his partner. It turns out she is in the ‘Northern Lands’ and they are soon to be reunited. The lyric is about belief in another person, and how in periods where not everything is going right, even the thought of that person can pull you through. Perfect for the story(!) but works as a standalone song as well. In fact Dan is doing a stripped down version that will also appear on her next album.
Here is a breakdown of the lyrics. Danielle wrote a lot of these, so it is perhaps not as ‘Off the Grid’ as some of the others!
NEVERENDING TWILIGHT (Steele/Nicholls)
As another morning shows
Yet inside I never know
If the daylight got much brighter
Would it reveal something I know Would I get my frame of reference back
But I’m stuck inside the shade
So I look to you for help
Cos I know you'll never judge me The most importatnt thing in a soul mate - the ability to feel safe sharing
When I share my secret self
Chorus 1
In this never ending twilight
I just can’t find the words
If only I could let some sunshine through
It’s like being in the darkest cloud
With nowhere else to float
But in this sky I know that wherever
you are I’ll be too
Verse 2
It’s a crazy thing to think Everyone has times that make them want to give up.
When I’m almost on the brink
of watching hope desert me
And letting darkness win
But what stops me in my tracks A friendly word is sometimes all it needs to get back on track
Is you’ve always got my back
And you never could forgive me
If I gave up what I have
Chorus 2
In this never ending twilight
I just can’t find the words
If only I could let some sunshine through
It’s like walking to the ends of the earth
To find nowhere left to go
But in this world I know that wherever
you go I’ll go too
Middle 8
Sunset, sunrise where have you gone? The reality of being near the arctic circle is the lack of dark/light
Help me see beyond this haze Until you get bacome accustomed, it messes with your senses
Help me find the sun
Chorus 3
In this never ending twilight
I just can’t find the words
If only I could let some sunshine through
It’s like looking through twisted glass We tried lots of alternatives! Frosted lense/Tinted glass/Foggy lense
Where nothing appears clear
Though I'm navigating blindly Trying to hang on to someone in the mist when all you can see is a silhouette
I still see the shape of you Perhaps a cop from a ginger haired writer?
So in this world I know that wherever
you go I’ll go too
